Pushing the Boundaries of Rapid VFX Turnaround: Behind the Scenes of Russ’ “How Long” Music Video

At RFX Media, we pride ourselves on blending technical mastery with operational efficiency, and our work on Russ’ “How Long” music video exemplifies this ethos. Tasked with delivering high-quality VFX under an aggressive 48–72 hour timeline, our team successfully executed a suite of intricate visual effects that required precision, attention to detail, and a streamlined pipeline.

High-Precision Wire Cleanup and Advanced Rotoscoping

A significant portion of the project involved meticulous wire cleanup and frame-accurate rotoscoping. Leveraging a combination of planar tracking, advanced keying techniques, and custom masking workflows, we ensured the live-action footage remained distraction-free while retaining its original integrity. By developing a tailored shot pipeline that emphasized precision and speed, we met tight deadlines without compromising on quality.

Our use of automated cleanup scripts augmented by manual artist intervention enabled pixel-perfect removal of unwanted elements, ensuring seamless integration of VFX with the live-action footage. This process demanded not just technical expertise but also an acute understanding of the director’s visual intent, allowing us to blend art and technology flawlessly.

3D Excellence: The Hourglass Scene

The highlight of the music video—a dramatic sequence featuring Russ standing on a massive sand sculpture of a woman encased in an hourglass—was conceived, designed, and executed entirely in 3D. This scene pushed the boundaries of creative and technical collaboration, requiring expertise across multiple disciplines of 3D production.

1. Concept Development and Asset Creation

Our 3D pipeline began with concept visualization, translating creative briefs into detailed designs for the hourglass and the sculptural figure. Using procedural and manual sculpting workflows, our artists constructed a high-resolution model that captured the organic complexity of both the hourglass and the cascading sand.

Modeling and Sculpting Tools: Maya and ZBrush for base geometry and fine detail sculpting.

High-Fidelity Texturing: Substance Painter and Designer to generate photorealistic sand and glass materials.

2. Advanced Sand Simulations

Creating the flowing, granular dynamics of cascading sand required advanced simulations. We utilized Houdini’s grain solvers, fine-tuned particle behaviors, and collision physics to replicate the organic flow of sand within the hourglass. By implementing GPU-accelerated caching workflows, we iterated quickly to refine the naturalistic motion of sand, achieving an optimal balance of realism and performance.

3. Lighting and Rendering Integration

Matching live-action elements with CG assets demanded a nuanced approach to lighting and rendering. Using HDRI-based environment maps and custom light rigs in Arnold, we replicated the subtle interplay of light on sand grains and glass surfaces. Accurate shadow casting and refraction calculations ensured that the CG hourglass integrated seamlessly with the live-action plate.

Final compositing in Nuke brought all elements together, leveraging deep image workflows to maintain depth accuracy and layer complexity, resulting in a visually cohesive and impactful sequence.

Efficiency Under Pressure: The RFX Workflow

Delivering such a high-caliber visual experience within a compressed timeline required a robust and adaptive workflow. Our efficiency stemmed from the following:

Optimized Pipeline: Pre-configured VFX templates and collaborative review tools reduced iteration cycles.

Cloud-Accelerated Rendering: Distributed rendering across a cloud-based infrastructure ensured rapid turnaround for the complex 3D assets.

Parallel Tasking: Artists worked simultaneously across wire cleanup, rotoscoping, and 3D production, minimizing downtime.

Conclusion: Precision, Speed, and Creativity in Perfect Harmony

The “How Long” music video showcases RFX Media’s capability to deliver technically demanding VFX work under challenging conditions. From the flawless wire cleanup to the intricately designed hourglass scene, our work demonstrates an unwavering commitment to precision, creativity, and operational efficiency.

This project is a testament to RFX Media’s ability to execute on tight deadlines without sacrificing quality, meeting both creative visions and technical challenges head-on. If you’re seeking a partner to handle complex VFX challenges with speed and reliability, RFX Media delivers every time.
